5 Reasons Why I Love Being an Expat Woman in Dubai

When I announced that I was about to be an expat woman in Dubai three years ago, I had diverse reactions. While some people were genuinely happy and positive, most were wondering if I had decided to convert to Islam, stop going out and cover my face. WRONG.

Being an expat woman in Dubai has taught me a lot, introduced me to incredible people and enjoy endless opportunities.

Dubai might not be a perfect place, but there sure are some positive aspects to it… Let’s dig in!

SAFETY

Being able to walk home at 3am in a short dress or jumping in a taxi and falling asleep, leaving your keys and money on the table and going for a swim… Seem like risky situations? Not in Dubai!

The laws are so strict and the culture so open minded that stealing and being disrespectful doesn’t even come to mind. Sure, the taxi might take a longer road to make some extra dirhams and you might get stared at in the street on a regular basis, but no one will ever approach you too close and that is a relief!

LADIES NIGHTS

Oh the sacred ladies nights. Tuesday’s mostly, but every night of the week really! Whether it’s free drinks, free food or complimentary goodie bags, it’s the best time to join the girls and catch up on the gossip! Beware of the morning after at work…

SHOPPING

Dubai is home to no less than 70 shopping malls… And of course the biggest mall in the entire world, the Dubai Mall, is there. With its 1,200 shops and dedicated Level Shoe District (no jokes) this mall is every girl’s paradise… and every wallet’s nightmare! But hey, as we say, life is short, buy the shoes!

TRANSPORT

If you’ve ever lived in a big city such as Paris or London, you know the struggle of taking the metro during rush hour… With these unsolicited men that enjoy the promiscuity and take advantage of it. Well, in Dubai, if you decide to take the metro, there is a special “Ladies and Children” wagon… And men caught inside of it get a 100 dirhams fine. Boom!

PRIORITY

In the same vibe as the metro, being an expat woman in Dubai surely is a bonus! Whether you have to pass your medical test or renew your driving license, all the administration buildings have a special “ladies” waiting area… Which makes everything quicker and easier, WIN!
